F.Y. Chang Scholars 35th Anniversary

November 2024

From the late 1980s on, support from the F.Y. Chang Foundation has enabled more than 80 scholars and students from the PRC to study at Harvard Law School. That support has also made it possible for Harvard faculty and other noteworthy individuals to offer lectures in China. The Foundation was established by Julia Chang Bloch (A.M., GSAS 1967), founder of the U.S.-China Education Trust and the first Asian-American ambassador in U.S. history, and her husband Stuart M. Bloch (J.D. ’67), in memory of her father Chang Fuyun, the first Chinese Boxer Indemnity Scholarship student to graduate from Harvard Law School and himself a distinguished diplomat.

On October 9, EALS hosted a hybrid celebration of the 35th anniversary of the F.Y. Chang Scholars program, joined in person by Ambassador Bloch and her family as well as F.Y. Chang Scholars past and present, with many more Scholars joining via Zoom from across the U.S., China and Germany.

The celebration opened with Ambassador Bloch looking back on her father’s life and legacy, followed by panels of F.Y. Chang Scholars who shared memories of their time at HLS and its subsequent impact on their lives and careers. Dr. Li Bo (J.D. ’99), Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, closed the day by looking to the future, addressing pressing challenges in international climate policy.
