January 2024
Professor Bill Alford was fortunate to be able to spend two weeks in Korea in December 2023 as a guest of the President for his pro bono work on disability rights. Professor Alford co-founded and currently serves as Chair of the Harvard Law School Project on Disability (HPOD). During his visit, he met with senior officials, scholars, and civil society leaders to discuss key issues regarding disability. He also lectured twice at Seoul National University, once at a conference on disability law and policy (at the invitation of EALS Visiting Scholar Bokgi Kim), and once to all first-year law students (at the invitation of former SNU Law Dean and HLS Visiting Professor Seung Wha Chang, S.J.D. 1994). HLS Visiting Professor Michael Ashley Stein, co-founder and Executive Director of HPOD, also spoke at the conference (via taped segment) and the assembly of first-year students (via Zoom). While in Seoul, Professor Alford also took part in the Harvard Law School Association of Korea’s annual winter meeting; there, and at other social gatherings, he was very glad to see scores of former students and friends.
Professor Alford would like to reiterate his thanks to his hosts for their warm hospitality and the unforgettable experience he had in Korea.
